Thanks for your concern regarding the issue. I don't know what clue they
found and why they want to flame me. The fonts on Ekushey site have
*no* relation with me. But they are up to sue me without any reason.

Talking about fonts and after looking at your given link, I found that
the image they supplied is not a perfect match according to the claim.
There are lots of fonts on the market has similar faces. But when the
issue comes, you have to check the digital data. If Images are not
matching with each other, how come you'll match Digital Data!! So I'll
say that the issue is totally spineless. smile.gif And raised for unknown reason.

Before we can vote please define what constitutes font piracy.

Microsoft is accused of copying linotype and trying to get trademark on that in EU. EU (trademarks and designs) judge throws out the application saying:
“The typefaces of both designs have the same stroke thickness. The ratio from cap-height to descender height is equal. The proportion of character height to character pitch is identical. The type face in the specimen text does not show any differences. The minuscule “a”, “c”, “e” “g” and “t” have the same proportion … blah blah… crossbeam at the “e” … blah… “c” shows the same shape … blah.. the same sweep… totally identical in both designs. blah do not show any difference.”

Microsoft is also ordered to pay the legal cost of Linotype. Details here

We had long discusisons about ekushey's piracy of Microsoft's font. This time Microsoft is the culprit.

Also it is not quite clear cut and easy to tell whether a font is pirated.

smile.gif Dear Alamgir Bhai, I think we don't need any defination about font piracy. Cause, we already have a topic about that & voting is related to that topic...

[**SORRY** sad.gif It was my fault that I didn't post the link...]

That's fine. I read that.

But Microsoft itself is now accused of pirating few fonts of Linotype.

The reasons people do that:
1. Desiging a new font from scratch is extremely difficult job and needs highly qualifed 'typographer'.
2. For language like English, there are already all possible fontfaces on the market, and it is just not possible to come up with a new look sufficiently different from others.

3. Target market is very narrow. End user dont buy a font! At best they buy a software.

The reasons we (BD people) do it:
1. This is the quickest way to see the names flagging around.
2. No proper legislation and legal framework to go punished.
3. The original vendors themselves probably did the same thing so we think we had the right.
4. Distributing something (of others) for free feels like a charity work.
5. Few tech savy people, so fear of geitting caught is very low.

Extra:
A guy from dhaka copied Joomla source code and replaced few 'Joomla' string with NSMAMU and yes created his own CMS! He also has a website: www.nsmamu.com. Unfortunately it was later hacked and now points to Joomla.org

Lessons:
Even free things are prone to be stolen.

Alamgir, you got my point! smile.gif

Thanks for the details explanation...most of there say (when caught) 'which one is original ?' 'they do so I am.'

Disgusting...I bored to even talking about piracy...

I saw they are 'winner' or has been publicized (at Newspaper/Magazine TV etc) who 'copy-paste' some free/open source projects...and adds the tag 'Made by me!' or 'Developed by ...'

...guys, open source project let's you learn the tech...if you choose some project, watch others then make one from the scratch...invent new features...extend the posibility...No doubt, you'll eNjoy...peoples will be happy and 'Bangali' will not taged as 'dirty lammer'!!
